BRINGING CHOCOLATE INTO YOUR CLASSROOM

A primary school chocolate workshop with a difference

A Cocoa Encounters chocolate workshop couldn’t be easier; without leaving school, children will be immersed into the exotic world of chocolate, past and present.

Take a journey back to the rainforest and the origin of our chocolate then trace their steps across the oceans to Lincolnshire to see how Lincolnshire’s own Willy Wonka turns them into chocolate.

Put your tasting skills to work, challenge your taste buds and explore your own relationship with chocolate.

INSPIRING NEW CAREERS

Who wants to be a chocolate judge?

As a certified chocolate taster and international chocolate judge with over 10 years of experience in tasting fine chocolate, I can transform the excitement of the subject of chocolate into an enriching curriculum experience.

Children will also be introduced to the idea of growing up to be a chocolate taster or entrepreneur, opening up a whole new world of career possibilities!

The workshops for schools open up possible career paths that children may not have considered before, alongside learning designed around the national curriculum

Whether you're looking to introduce a new topic, develop a deeper understanding or even embed previous learning, children will be sure to acquire lots of new knowledge whilst buzzing with excitement.

MEET MIDGE

Take a trip to the origin of chocolate

There would be no chocolate without the chocolate midge. During the workshop, the children will be introduced to Midge, the tiniest and arguably the most vital player in the production of chocolate.

Midge is a friendly reminder of how important the environment is to the sustainability of chocolate.

Children find having a character to guide them on their journey exciting, which is why Midge is an important part of all of our learning.

DESIGNED WITH YOUR CLASS IN MIND

Moulded to suit your curriculum

Children will be treated to an initial activity session dedicated to enriching curriculum learning followed by the chocolate tasting activities.

They will taste milk and dark chocolate made from cocoa beans from Central America and the Caribbean, challenging their expectations of chocolate and linking their learning back to your curriculum choice.

ENHANCING YOUR CURRICULUM

Thinking beyond the Maya

The Maya and Rainforest are a popular choice for chocolate workshops, although I have had requests for more diverse subjects focusing on Design Technology and Enterprise, Science and Food Chains and Healthy Diets.

Bringing chocolate into one of these topics takes chocolate - something children are very familiar with - and puts it into different contexts to give an exciting and memorable take on any subject.

Learning about the rainforests

Part One: Curriculum Focused

The first part of the workshop is tailored to match your curriculum needs and can focus on any of the following:

  • Ancient Civilisations - Maya Civilisation
  • Environmental Geography - Rainforest, Sustainable Living, Conservation
  • Science: - Habitats, Plants, Ecology and Environment, Food Chains, Life Cycles
  • Food - Chocolate Making, Preparing Foods and Cooking Techniques, Nutrition and Healthy Diets
  • Design Technology - Materials and Packaging

Part Two: Tasting Fine Chocolate

A practical session with group tasting exercises to identify tongue tastes and aromas.

Students are then taught the art of tasting using cocoa beans and fine chocolate, and challenged to identify different flavour profiles and origins.

This is always a favourite part of the learning for children.

Not only do they get to use the skills from part one to really understand the chocolate, but they get to experience incredible flavours which they may not have encountered before.

Well planned and organised

The practical session was extremely well planned and organised - no time was wasted getting things out or preparing for activities.

The learning was well-layered, starting with an understanding of different types of tastes and applying this to tasting the chocolate.

The children were extremely enthusiastic about what they had done and learned.

Enthralled by the process of proper chocolate tasting

Every child had an opportunity to be involved in the sessions. They were enthralled by the
process of proper chocolate tasting and learnt how most of our senses played a part. All
resources were well thought through so they could be accessed by all pupils.

Pitched just right for our year 3/4 pupils

I would thoroughly recommend Kathryn to any school wanting an informative, interactive
insight into the creation of chocolate and its origins. This linked fabulously with our
rainforest topic and was pitched just right for our year 3/4 pupils. It was also great to get
some chocolate tasting tips and an insight into what being a chocolate connoisseur is all
about. Both pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the sessions!

...enabled them to ask thought provoking questions to better their understanding.

Our children had a wonderful morning. The organisation, delivery and interaction with the
children meant the session was enjoyable and insightful. The content was challenging
enough for the class to manage, which enabled them to ask thought provoking questions
to better their understanding. Kathryn was great with the children, demonstrating great
enthusiasm for her specialism. A great morning!
